What is fibre optic broadband?
Fibre broadband is a new type of broadband that is being installed throughout the UK, which is referred to as ’Superfast Broadband’ and will help to increase business broadband speeds. ADSL broadband was the option before fibre broadband was available, which used telephone lines to deliver internet information. With ADSL connections you rarely get the download speeds that you see advertised.
ADSL: up to 24mb Broadband – speeds can vary widely – Average Speed 8mb
New Fibre Broadband: up to 80mb Broadband – Average Speed 30mb
Fibre broadband proposes to offer easy and efficient superfast business broadband connections. Light signals are delivered through fibre optic cables, made of glass rather than copper wire. Information travels along cables instantly and as a result, the speeds will be more likely to match the advertised speed. The way we use our broadband and what we will be able to do will significantly ‘improve’. Superfast speeds will mean better and improved social and business experience by quicker downloading music & films, watching TV and downloading and sending business files.
Types of Fibre Broadband
There are generally two types of fibre broadband connections:-
Fibre to the cabinet
Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) involves running fibre optic cables from the telephone exchange to the street cabinets, from the cabinet it then connects via copper wire to connect to a standard phone line, normally uses VDSL technology.
Fibre to the home / premises
Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), provides fibre optic connection for the full distance from the exchange to the building, this can deliver faster speeds as its fibre optic all the way without any copper.
